Diesel Reduction Efforts Garner Award
Marten’s initiative to install Auxiliary Power Units draws attention from EPA

(November 2, 2007) Chicago  – Marten Transport received the Leadership Award  from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5’s Midwest Clean Diesel Initiative Leadership Group at a special ceremony on October 11, 2007.
Marten was the only trucking company to receive such recognition.
EPA Region 5 Administrator Mary A. Gabe commented that “These award winners have all done a great job and are role models to their communities, their constituents and peers.”
Marten received the award based on emission reductions connected with the installation of Auxiliary Power Units in the fleet.  Ed Accola, Maintenance Administration Manager for Marten, accepted the award. He credited the company’s drivers for the recognition.
“Our drivers that have an APU installed on their tractors have virtually eliminated engine idle, they have earned and deserve the credit for this award.”
Marten expects to have over 1,100 tractors equipped with an APU by the end of the year.  This puts the company ahead of schedule, in meeting the 18-month goal of equipping its entire fleet with the units. Since the $16 million project started in May of 2007, more than half of Marten’s drivers have been at or below 2.5% idle time, and that’s a remarkable achievement.
“Our driver’s commitment to eliminate engine idle saves fuel, money and the environment,” Accola said. “With our current idle reduction from our drivers, we expect to save enough fuel to pay for the APUs in less than 18 months from installation.”
The MCDI Leadership Group consists of 33 public-sector and private industry organizations that share the goal of cutting emissions from one million diesel engines in EPA Region 5 by 2010. The EPA created the initiative to reduce emissions from older, existing diesel engines not covered by EPA’s stringent standards for cleaner fuels and new, cleaner engines.  Diesel emissions contain large amounts of nitrogen oxides and fine particles (soot).  Nitrogen oxides are precursors of ozone (smog), which is a lung irritant.
