John Christner Driver Proves There Still are Good Samaritans on the Highways

Sapulpa , Ok – February 8, 2007 – Jim Hoffman, a driver for John Christner Trucking, LLC is a first responder in a roll over accident.

In the early hours of the morning on January 26 th heading eastbound on Hwy 84 near Scranton, Pennsylvania Jim Hoffman was flagged down by a young woman standing 200 feet in front of him. It was dark and the blue light from the cell phone that she was waving caught his eye. Jim pulled to the side of the road to see if he could help. The young woman had been involved in a roll over accident and had badly injured her leg. It was around 2 degrees that morning and as Jim called 911 he helped the women into his truck and applied pressure to her bleeding leg. Emergency services had to track Jim and the woman’s location by GPS, as they were waiting for the paramedics to arrive Jim questioned the girl about the accident. He then discovered that there were 3 other victims that were still at the scene. Jim then grabbed his flashlight and began his search for the vehicle and the other three passengers. He located the vehicle and 3 young men several hundred feet off the road near the west bound lanes. One of the young men had been thrown from the vehicle and had believed that he had broken his legs. At this point Jim felt helpless because he knew due to the victims’ condition that he should not move him from the snow and extremely cold temperatures that he was suffering in. Jim took one of the men back to his truck and grabbed his favorite blanket that he had bought while serving his country in Saudi Arabia. He returned to the scene of the accident to cover up the man who was lying in the snow and tend to the other victim.

Jim spent his time until the paramedics arrived running from his truck to the accident scene and back trying to make sure that everyone was going to be ok. Many cars had passed by during this time, one car actually stopped to lend a hand only to turn out to be a spectator.

When the emergency crews arrived, the scene was hectic as they worked on the four victims on both sides of the highway. Even in the mist of all of the chaos Jim switched from hero back to truck driver and sent a quick message to inform John Christner Trucking that he was going to be late delivering his freight. As the victims were loaded into the ambulances, Jim had finished giving his report and got back into his truck to continue to his drop site.

Later that morning an email from Jamie Wallace, a paramedic with the Jefferson Township Ambulance, made it to John Christner Trucking commending the driver of trailer #6086, “His quick thinking really made a difference for the well being of strangers he didn’t even know”. They wanted to express their thanks to him but were only able to identify him by a number on his trailer as he drove away.

Josh Muskrat, Jim’s driver manager stated, “This guy truly is one of the best drivers I’ve ever worked with.  Jim’s not high on himself, which doesn’t surprise me that he left without a thank you. Drivers like this aren’t recognized enough,”

For Jim, responding to this accident was impulsive, as he sits back and recollects on that morning, he remembered that the victims were in there late teens, early twenties and said, “someday if something happens to my kids, I hope someone would stop for them”. This is not the first time that Jim has been a first responder to an accident. He recalls three other times throughout his driving career that he has helped others who have been in car accidents.

It is comforting to know that we share the highways with a noble driver like Jim Hoffman who will be there to help if we are in need.
