Driver Barry Byram Continues Service to Public

Little Rock, Ark., February 7, 2007—American Central Transport driver Barry Byram of Jonesboro, Arkansas recently took another opportunity to make a difference in the life of a stranger.  Byram, who helped save a life after a car accident in July of 2006, stopped his tractor when he noticed a young woman standing beside a broken down car on an Arkansas road.

When Byram asked the young woman if she needed help, she replied that help was on the way, but that her family wouldn’t be there to pick her up for five hours.  Byram called the girl’s family to offer his assistance.  Then, he drove his tractor to his house, got in his personal vehicle and went back to pick her up.  He took the young lady to his home, where his wife made them something to eat.  Later, when the girl’s family arrived, Byram took the girl back to her car and helped load it onto the tow truck.

The family contacted ACT to express their thanks that Byram went the extra mile to help a stranger.  When ACT informed Byram, he responded by saying he only did what he thought was right.

“I was always raised to respect people and help them out.  I’ve told my children that they should strive to do something for someone every day, even if it is just opening a door,” said Byram.

On the afternoon of Monday, July 24, a car spun out of control on I-40 at Brownsville, Tennessee. Byram’s truck was one of the first vehicles on the scene. Drawing from training he received during twelve years in a military helicopter unit, he evaluated the injured woman then took off his shirt and used it as a tourniquet to stop the bleeding. He also gathered identification, medications and other vital information that would later help police and medical professionals determine what caused her to veer off the road.

“Truck drivers tend to get a bad rap out on the roadway these days.  At ACT, we recognize and celebrate the diverse background that our drivers bring to our team.  Byram is a great example of this diversity,” said Tom Kretsinger, Jr., President/Chief Operating Officer.
