TRINCON Develops Driver Turnover Cost Calculator

COLUMBUS, OhioTRINCON GROUP, a leading national transportation industry advisory firm, has developed an electronic worksheet for calculating the costs of driver turnover, and has made it available for free through the company Web site, www.trincon.com.

The worksheet uses activity-based cost accounting to measure the direct costs of lost productivity and revenue associated with driver turnover, idle trucks and time spent recruiting, orienting and training new drivers.
TRINCON, which advises management teams in the trucking industry on issues related to productivity and human resources, uses the same approach to measure the effectiveness of client company programs.

"We are often asked to demonstrate the true costs of driver turnover and many people are astounded when they learn how much of an effect it can have on a company's bottom line," said TRINCON President Duff H.
Swain. "The calculator can quickly generate an accurate picture of the lost productivity many trucking companies face with today's high rates of driver turnover."

An example of the turnover cost calculation would be a 245-truck fleet that has a driver turnover rate of 99 percent and has 13 trucks (or five percent) that sit idle as a result. The company in this example is burdened with approximately $1.57 million per year in lost profits due to idle trucks and recruitment efforts.

In another example, a company with a fleet of 50 trucks would suffer $560,000 per year in lost profits, assuming that five percent of its fleet sits idle and it requires a 10-day cycle time on reseating a truck.

The calculator considers a company's driver baseincluding contract drivers and asks users to input the number of drivers that have quit or have been terminated within a given time period.
