Evansville National Guard awards Atlas for donation
Critical computer equipment donation prompts award at company headquarters
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – When Mike Townsend asked his employer, Atlas Van Lines, to help replace a critical piece of computer equipment for his National Guard unit serving in Iraq, the Evansville-based company sprang into action.
Atlas’ information technology department quickly refurbished and reformatted an extra server and shipped it to Iraq – free of charge – so the Indiana National Guard’s 1st Battalion of the 163rd Field Artillery could use it as an e-mail and Web server. The new server enhanced the battalion’s ability to send and receive e-mail and access the Internet – allowing them to maintain and retrieve valuable records and training procedures.
On Feb. 20, Major Mark Weaver of the 1st Battalion, 163rd Field Artillery presented a plaque to Atlas Chairman and CEO Michael Shaffer and President and COO James Stamm, both Vietnam veterans.
“Because we have a number of employees who serve, or have served in the armed forces, we take extra pride in providing assistance to the military in any way that we can,” Shaffer said. “It’s a unique part of our company and an important service to our country.”
Atlas officials say the decision to donate the server was easy. The company regularly upgrades and replaces its information technology equipment creating a series of backups to be used for emergencies.
