  • Latest map updates, mileage directory and industry reference material help professional drivers plan more cost-efficient routes —

SKOKIE, Ill., Jan. 3, 2006 — High fuel costs, strict commercial transportation regulations and constantly changing roadways across the country make it crucial for truck drivers to use only the most current information to plan the most efficient routes.

The new 2006 edition of the Rand McNally Motor Carriers’ Road Atlas — North America’s best-selling truckers’ atlas — combines in a single source the latest map and trucking information, including state access policies and weight and size limits, to help truck drivers comply with industry regulations and save time and expense.

The 2006 Motor Carriers’ Road Atlas line includes the Motor Carriers’ Road Atlas , the Deluxe Motor Carriers’ Road Atlas and the Large Scale Motor Carriers’ Road Atlas. All three titles are available now at truck stop chains nationwide, online at www.mcra.randmcnally.com and at other locations where books are sold.

“The latest edition of the Motor Carriers’ Road Atlas is an investment that helps truck drivers and fleet managers plan efficient routes and avoid mistakes that can impact their bottom lines,” said Nathalie Strassheim, managing editor for Rand McNally, North America ’s largest commercial mapmaker. “The atlas features annually updated information that helps drivers better contend with changes to critical points on their routes like weigh stations and low clearances.”

Thousands of Map and Road Construction Updates

The 2006 Motor Carriers’ Road Atlas line features more than 2,000 map updates including new roads and interstate exits, and more than 300 changes to low clearance, weigh station and restricted route listings. Updates range from the newly renumbered I-70 exits in Utah to Interstate, U.S. and state highways in West Virginia now designated as STAA (Surface Transportation Assistance Act) -authorized for trailers up to 53 feet long and 102 inches wide.

All designated truck routes — including the national network of truck-routable highways and routes designated by individual states — are highlighted on the maps for easy instant reference.

Motor Carriers’ Road Atlas owners can access free exclusive roadwork information online and plan their trips around new road construction projects . Users can register at www.mcra.randmcnally.com/register and search projects by state highway numbers, learn project start and stop dates, and download color-coded maps showing the extent of each project.

Informative Resource, Much More Than Maps

Rand McNally consolidates data from government agencies to provide reliable information on hazardous material restrictions and to highlight state-designated truck routes with STAA (Surface Transportation Assistance Act) -authorized dimensions. While features such as state access policies and a 22-page mileage directory with more than 40,000 city-to-city mileages help serve drivers’ business needs, the Motor Carriers’ Road Atlas also lists hotel/motel toll-free numbers and Web sites to serve drivers’ personal needs.

The printed atlas refers users to “Related Links” at www.mcra.randmcnally.com for frequently updated information. For example, a “Fuel Tax Charts” link on the site connects to the International Fuel Tax Association (IFTA) for quarterly fuel tax rate updates. Links to various “Industry Resources” allow Motor Carriers’ Road Atlas users to check official policies and programs on insurance requirements, drug and alcohol testing and safety from agencies like the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).

In addition, map pages and locator grid references in the standard and deluxe Motor Carriers’ Road Atlas versions cross-reference Rand McNally’s MileMaker® and IntelliRoute® transportation software products.

Three Versions For a Range of Trucking Needs

The perfect-bound Motor Carriers’ Road Atlas is published in paperback. The spiral-bound Deluxe Motor Carriers’ Road Atlas features laminated pages for durability and write-on/wipe-off ability. Both versions include maps of the United States , Canada and Mexico .

The Large Scale Motor Carriers’ Road Atlas features non-glare pages with maps of the United States that are 32 percent larger. Both the deluxe and large scale versions have water- and tear-resistant pages, and spiral bindings that allow drivers to view maps flat and more easily maneuver them.

The suggested retail prices of $19.95 for the standard, $79.95 for the deluxe version and $125 for the large scale version generally are discounted at truck stops.
