Innovative Home Run Scheduling Program Keeps Schneider National Drivers in the Game
Program Scores Big with Time at Home and Driver Retention
Green Bay, Wis. --July 12, 2005--Schneider National Inc., a premier provider of transportation, logistics and related services, today announced the continuing success of the company's "Home Run" program, an alternative work arrangement that offers drivers a more predictable work schedule and increased time at home.
The program has gained popularity with company drivers and driver recruits and is a component of Schneider National's ongoing work-life improvement initiatives. In February 2005 Schneider implemented the largest compensation and work-life improvement package in the company's 70-year history.
The innovative Home Run program consists of "pods" of three drivers or driving teams that live near each other and share two tractors. A driver, or team, gets one week at "home," while the other two "run." Each driver receives a personal calendar in advance that identifies their weeks at home for one year. Home Run drivers enjoy 17 weeks at home per year, relatively unheard of in the industry.
"Spending more time at home is one of the top quality of life issues for truck drivers today," said Rob Reich, vice president of enterprise recruiting at Schneider National. "With Schneider's Home Run program drivers can increase their time at home while still getting the miles they need to make a great living. The program has been well received by current drivers, and is now helping our driver recruitment efforts as well."
Currently, more than 250 of Schneider's 15,500 drivers participate in the Home Run program, with the expectation that the program will grow to 500 by the end of 2005.
"The Schneider Home Run program gives us the predictability that we need to plan our work and our lives. We get a definite schedule for the whole year
in advance so we know exactly when we will be home and on the road," said
Schneider National driver Terri Lynch. "As a Home Run driver, I have the time that I need to get things done at home and I'm well rested when I get back to work on the road."
