‘Mr. Coffee’ Perks Up Geography Lessons

When fourth-grade teacher Dana Jarrett heard about the Trucker Buddy program, he thought it would be an excellent avenue to offer his students an opportunity to “see” the United States through the eyes of an experienced driver. He is pleased with the efforts of his Trucker Buddy, adding, “The program has not only fulfilled my highest expectations, but in the process, we have gained a friendship with a man of highest dignity and respect.”

The driver who has made this impression on Jarrett and his students at Royal Oaks Elementary in Kan-napolis, NC is Duane Winchell (also known as “Mr. Coffee”) of Montello, WI. Duane is an owner-operator, leased to Coastal Carriers (Troy, MO). Duane has been a Trucker Buddy since 1998, and in the process he has helped his classes learn more than just geography, math and better writing skills.

Kadaris is a student in Mr. Jarrett’s class who nominated “Mr. Coffee” as driver of the month because, “He always tells us to be good and to study hard.” Chris, another fourth-grader, says that their Trucker Buddy helps the class learn about the states when he sends them postcards from around the country. Student Gerald calls Duane “a very talented guy,” because he can explain how his satellite communication works.

Trucker Buddy Duane is one of nearly 4,000 professional drivers who share their time with elementary classes throughout the world. The only criteria to be a Trucker Buddy is to be a truck driver willing to send a postcard each week to a class in grades two through eight. Drivers and teachers can find out more about the Trucker Buddy program by visiting www.truckerbuddy.org or calling (800) MY BUDDY.

Duane Winchell will receive a personalized jacket, along with a check for $300 to spend on his class and $200 in Trucker Buddy merchandise. Over the Road and Pro Trucker magazines are proud sponsors of the Trucker Buddy program.
