Some Senators Reach Bipartisan Agreement On Next Highway Bill
With just a few months left before the expiration of the current highway funding bill, there is a glimmer of hope that the impending depletion of the Highway Trust Fund – and upcoming elections – may be driving some lawmakers together to write and pass a new funding bill on a timely basis.
Kevin Jones, over at our sister publication CCJ, reports that leaders of the Senate committees involved with highway funding have recently agreed on key elements of the next bill. Their priorities for the bill include:
- Passing a long-term bill, as opposed to a short-term patch;
- Maintaining the formulas for existing core programs;
- Promoting fiscal responsibility by keeping current levels of funding, plus inflation.
