The NATSO Foundation has been educating truckers for years on truck stops and travel plazas. As the research and outreach branch of NATSO (National Association of Truck Stop Operators), the NATSO Foundation is responsible for improving truck stop management, performance, and up-to-date news. Just recently they have decided to partner with Truckers Against Trafficking (TAT) to inform and train truckers on how to deal with human trafficking.
What is TAT? Truckers Against Trafficking is a 501(c)3 organization that promotes awareness of domestic human trafficking and how to prevent it. Truck stops serve as a major hub for prostitution. It is up to truck drivers to take a stand and make the call.
The main problem seems to be the bystander that sees a young girl walking along the trucks and simply ignores it. They think to themselves, “What could I possibly do to fix this? It’s her fault in the first place!” All of this comes from not knowing what is really going on. Most people do not realize what a major problem this is in the United States and sadly, a few truckers are part of the problem.
NATSO Foundation’s step to aid TAT in spreading their message will help save hundreds of young girls from a desperate, sad life of imprisonment and slavery. When I asked TAT what they thought about this, they responded quickly by saying,
We are excited to see how more and more members of the trucking industry are partnering with TAT to help fight human trafficking. It is a testament to the trucking industry that they are so proactive in this cause. We are thrilled that NATSO is partnering with us. We hope that truck stop and travel plaza employees across the country will see our TAT training video and will make the call, and save lives when they see anyone underage being prostituted or evidence of pimp control no matter what the age of the person being prostituted.
The training video TAT mentions is actually very moving. I took the time to watch it before I wrote this and I think it is very eye opening and challenging. What are you doing on the road to end human trafficking? Don’t fall into the trap that it’s “not my problem.” Make a difference. Make the call.
A great first step would be to watch the video and consider the issue. As TAT’s efforts grow, with support from NATSO and other great sponsors, the noose tightens around traffickers. Let’s make truck stops a “no go” for pimps. Let’s show them that truck drivers are adamantly against this evil slavery that destroys lives.
