Each year, truckers across the globe gather in support of Special Olympics. The annual “World’s Largest Truck Convoy” is a fundraising event aimed at sponsoring Special Olympic athletes and making the games possible for those who otherwise would not have a chance. As part of this fundraiser, truck drivers volunteer to raise money and ride in the largest convoy they can gather to raise awareness and show their support for the athletes and their families.
In all 50 states and over 30 other countries, truckers are gathering in a friendly competition to see who can boast the largest convoy. This year, the honors go to the Manitoba Trucking Association. Perimeter Highway was filled with 170 large trucks escorted by the police. This number is an all time high for the entire organization. The numbers have steadily increased. For over 10 years, the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) has helped make the convoy possible. The LETR has been going since 1981 and has grown so much that in 2011 it raised 42 million dollars for Special Olympics!
LETR has continued to expand and help grow the World’s Largest Truck Convoy. The truck convoy is fairly new, but it has already raised over 4 million dollars. With time and awareness, these events will continue to grow and opportunities for special athletes will rise. In the end, it’s about enriching the lives of those with special needs.
To see how you can participate and raise funds, check out the Special Olympics Convoy Registration. It is also worth mentioning that the truck driver that raises the most funds gets to lead the entire convoy while Special Olympic athletes ride in the trucks as well. Until then, get started on raising those funds!
