Under the heading of “better late than never,” the EPA recently announced that it was easing the mandate for production of renewable fuels, including biodiesel and ethanol. The rollback is a four month extension of the period to meet the original 2013 quotas. The new deadline is June 30, 2014.
When the renewable quotas were established in 2007, the volume-based targets were set using the then-current trends for increased fuel consumption. In the meantime, weak economic activity and more efficient vehicles have greatly cut fuel consumption, limiting the potential for meeting the mandate.
