Regulators Finally Promote Fatigue Prevention
It may be a case of the cart getting way too far ahead of the horse, but just after releasing the HOS rules that were 20 years in the making, it finally occurred to the regulators that “big picture” prevention of driver fatigue might be more productive than enforcement efforts and micro-managing a driver’s schedule.
With that in mind, the FMCSA, Transport Canada, and others have collaborated on the recently launched North American Fatigue Management Program (NAFMP), a website that provides training and education on commercial bus and truck driver fatigue management. Resources on the NAFMP website include:
- Information to help develop a company atmosphere that reduces driver fatigue;
- Fatigue management education for everyone in the trucking industry, from drivers and their families to the shippers & receivers, executives at the top to dispatchers at the bottom; and
- Information about diagnosing and treating sleep disorders.
